Na’åsson yu’ påpa’ (Lay Me Down)

For my student’s final project for HI-211 or History of Guam, one of the groups as part of their project are actually going to record a popular contemporary song in Chamorro. One of the members is in the University Singers and has a beautiful tenor voice, so they have chosen “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith. If you have not heard it yet, I highly suggest you go and check it out. It is a beautiful song and here is the translation that I have come up with.

Hunggan, hu hongge (Yes, I do, I believe)
na un dia (That one day)
bai hu gaige guenao gi fi’on-mu (I will be where I was right there, right next to you)

Gof makkat este (And it’s hard)
Kulan gof homhom i ha’åni siha (The days just seems so dark)
Taibåli i pilan yan i puti’on sin Hågu (The moon, the stars are nothing without you)

I pinacha-mu, i lassas-mu (Your touch, your skin)
Manu na bai hu tutuhon? (Where do I begin?)
Tåya’ finiho siña u eksplika (No words can explain)
Na gof mahålang yu’ nu hågu (The way I’m missing you))

ñiega este na tinaya’ (Deny this emptiness)
Este na måddok ni gaige yu’ gi sanhalom (This hole that I’m inside)
Este na lago’ (These tears)
Ma sasångan i estorian-ñiha (They tell their own story)

Ma sangåni yu’ munga kumåti yanggen taigue hao (Told me not to cry when you were gone)
lao inañao ni siniente, mampos dimasiao (But the feeling’s overwhelming, it’s much too strong)

Kao siña yu’ umåsson gi fi’on-mu? (Can I lay by your side?)
gi fi’on-mu, fi’on-mu (Next to you, you)
yan na’siguru na maolek hao (And make sure you’re alright)
Bai hu pulan hao (I’ll take care of you)
Tåya’ hinangai-hu yanggen ti siña humihita lamo’na (I don’t want to be here if I can’t be with you tonight)

Hu kekeågang hao (I’m reaching out to you)
Kao siña un hungok i inagang-hu? (Can you hear my call?)
Este na piniti ni hu siesiente (This hurt that I’ve been through)
Mahålang yu’ nu hågu, gof mahålang yu’ nu Hågu (I’m missing you, missing you like crazy)

Na’åsson yu’ påpa’ lamo’na (Lay me down tonight)
Na’åsson yu’ gi fi’on-mu (Lay me down by your side)
